CRICKET: YORKSHIRE skipper Darren Gough is tipping Michael Vaughan to keep the England captaincy for "as long as he wants it".
Sheffielder Vaughan goes into the first Test against New Zealand next Thursday under pressure after five innings for Yorkshire have brought only 133 runs. His average in the winter series win in New Zealand was a meagre 20 and he has already handed t
he one day captaincy of England to Paul Collingwood.

But Gough insisted: "Michael is still one of the three best batsman in England. He's such a good player and great to have around when he's available for Yorkshire."

After successive series defeats in Sri Lanka and India, Vaughan took England to New Zealand and returned victorious, although he scored only one half-century.

A knee injury has threatened his career and is still a recurring problem.

Gough, who played under Vaughan in his first game in charge of England five years ago, believes the injury will not affect his captaincy credentials in the three-match series.

"I believe he'll cope well enough. For a captain you need someone intelligent, and Michael is that man at the moment. I'm sure the job of England captain will be his for as long as he wants it."
