Two year deal for Lockwood

DONCASTER Rovers defender Adam Lockwood, who captained the side for most of last season, has signed a new two-year deal with the Club.
The 26 year-old centre-back made 44 appearances for Rovers last term – netting two goals - despite missing the run-in after picking up a foot injury picked up in the 1-0 home defeat to Leeds United on April 1.

He battled his way back to fitness and came off the bench in the second half of the club's League One promotion play-off final at Wembley where he lifted the trophy along with the team captain for the game, Brian Stock.

But a second member of last season's promotion-winning Rovers squad left the club yesterday.

Centre-back Steve Roberts, who had rejected Rovers' new contract offer, signed a two-year deal with League One club Walsall.

The 28 year-old joined Rovers, where his brother Neil was already playing, during the summer of 2005.

He had caught the then manager Dave Penney's eye, with an outstanding display in the game between the two sides at the Racecourse Ground.

In addition to a dominant defensive display, he almost scored what would almost certainly have been the Welsh club's goal of the season - only an equally brilliant effort by keeper Andy Warrington denying his 35 yard shot.

Solid in the air and comfortable on the ball, Roberts was always in contention for a place in the team during his three-year spell at the club.

He would have played more games than he did for Rovers but for a catalogue of injuries.

He was in danger of becoming something of a forgotton man at the club until producing a series of outstanding displays during mid-season which resulted in him being called up for a depleted Wales squad for a friendly.

"That was the only period in the two seasons that we've been here that Steve Roberts was fully fit," said Rovers No 2 Richard O'Kelly.

"He played alongside Adam Lockwood and he looked excellent and he coped easily at that level and got picked for the Welsh squad."

With Rovers being unwilling to improve on the contract they offered Roberts after he rejected the deal on the table, he was free to speak to other clubs. Relegated Scunthorpe were also reported to be interested in him, but he elected to join the Saddlers.
