NOTTS County could enter the chase for Owls defender Richard Wood.
Sven Goran Eriksson's club are believed to have made an inquiry about the transfer-listed centre half.

Wealthy and ambitious County lost former England centre half Sol Campbell when he decided to quit the club and they could be looking to beef up their squad for the promotion challenge - they are fourth in League Two.

Eriksson is their director of football, and his former assistant at Manchester City, Hans Backe, was appointed manager last week in the wake of Ian McParland's sacking.

County's current team includes Wood's former Wednesday centre-back partner, Graeme Lee, who scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury last Saturday, and the Magpies' youth team manager is former Owls loan star and ex-Derby centre half Michael Johnson.

County will face opposition if they firm up their Wood interest.

Coventry are known to be keen on him, and Ipswich have not ruled out making a move.

The Sky Blues will be well aware of Wood's situation, having first made a bid for him just over a year ago, and could be confident of leading the chase as they bid to add at least three players to their squad.

Wednesday are looking to agree a deal with another club whereby Wood would make a loan move soon followed by a full transfer to that club in January.

Wood was transfer-listed by the Owls last week after a breakdown in talks about a new contract.

Chairman Lee Strafford has revealed that part of the club's offer to the 24-year-old was an opportunity for a testimonial.

Wood has missed the last four Wednesday matches because of an ankle injury. Darren Purse missed last Saturday's game at Bristol City because of illness, and the Owls could well stick with the new centre-back partnership of Richard Hinds and Lewis Buxton for Saturday's visit of QPR.

Last night QPR were held 1-1 at home by Crystal Palace, for whom keeper Julian Speroni starred.

Rangers have moved up to sixth, level on points with four other clubs but ahead of them because of a superior goal difference.

If Wood were to go to Notts County, it will show that he doesn't give two hoots about Wednesday or his career. It will show that all that he's bothered about is money, which appears to be the picture being painted anyhow.

I totally agree with you andyowls. It is too common nowadays to see footballers claiming to be loyal and not wanting to move but at the end of the day if they are offered more money they will go. The funny thing about all this is that all the teams that have been mentioned as buyer's are below Wednesday.

I don't blame the board for this, they have set a wage structure in order to prevent us from going further into debt. It's good to see that principles are being stuck too, for far too long footballers have been able to demand large sums of money and been given it. No one person, be it a player, chairman or manager are bigger than the club.

How about offering Wood to Derby as a straight swap for Varney.

I think that we should have let him go in the summer for a decent fee. He asked to be transfer listed so we stripped him of his captaincy and rightfully so. But then did we expect him to stay? Play second fiddle to Purse?

I don't think that Wood is going for football reasons and will go for the highest wages. I can't blame him as he is unlikely to ever win major honours so why not max out your earnings.

Varadi however is the one stirring all this up. And they talk about the players of today!!

Purse has been poor but we do have to get behind players.

The sad thing is that behind all the hype and spin and feel we are slowly going back into a downward spiral and will be in a relegation battle long before a play off position. Sorry to be negative but we have bought some real crocs and don't have a budget to replace with better players.

Johnson a star? Come off it Paul Thompson, you need to choose your words more sensibly than that. And it's about time the Star headline writer ceased referring to local players as "ace".

Yeah good one bentley...talking about cheapskates why did McCabe panic into selling Beattie? Because Everton were near the end of his £20k a week top-up agreement towards is wages and that meant you poor blunts having to stump it up!!

Only one seeing pound signs is your chairman and look where that's got you......4 losses on the bounce, below the little Owls, no win in 7 games, not looking too good is it.

Wimbledon Owl - Wood is 24 so will go for free in the summer if we don't sell him now.
