SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY chairman Lee Strafford said today that the club had landed a "huge" coup by the appointment of New York bank Inner Circle Sports as advisers on the Owls' bid to seal a US investment deal.
The bank have come on board as American specialists who have done major deals on behalf of Liverpool, Sunderland, Wembley Stadium, Real Madrid and a host of big American sports clubs.

Strafford believes that the current initiative - with talks already begun with potential investors - gives the Owls their best chance yet of sealing multi-million-pound investment.

The Owls chief said: "If this doesn't deliver a result, Sheffield Wednesday will never get major investment.

"They (Inner Circle] don't take deals on that harm their brand.

"This has been done brilliantly. If this doesn't land a result to the best possible investor through the best possible intermediaries, then good luck to any foootball club."

Strafford says that Wednesday are privileged because the American bank have turned down most approaches to aid English clubs - but they see the Owls as the having the right set-up and potential.

"They (Inner Circle] are seriously clued up," he added. "They have been hands-on at Liverpool and Sunderland, and they have looked at every other club who are trying to raise money and turned them down."

this man is seriously deluded. let me explain how it works. you PAY investment banks to work for you. this is possibly the worst investment banking business climate EVER. yet he is claiming that an investment bank short of business that is being paid to act for Wednesday is a huge 'coup'.

'this has been done brilliantly'...err Lee you've paid em to do their business...bit like me going into the bakers, buying a loaf of bread and saying 'I did that brilliantly'!!!!!

Above two comments:

Why has Inner Circle then turned down representing other football clubs?

And your analogy doesn't quite work "on the fells".

Its more like 8 people going into a bakery, asking for the same loaf of bread, and the baker giving the loaf to you as you have the most potential.

Again it all sounds promissing to me, but as ever we'll wait and see.

On the fells I think the point is that inner circle don't deal with anybody that they don't feel has the right attitude or potential. Yes we are paying but the ability to pay is not the only thing you need to get through the door! That is the coup.

Your bakers analogy is rubbish.

Zante Blade, you are right if anybody can make a mess of a golden opportunity then it will be us or you!

All,
There seems to be a little confusion. Inner circle is an investment bank that acts on behalf of interested parties, and is used by the owls as a middle man. If an interested party comes along, ie like gillette and hicks did with liverpool, they have to prove to the bank they have enough to invest in a club, the bank then lends the party the amount needed to invest, ie in this case say £50 million. the bank gains from this because they charge interest on the loan, the investors gain because they did not risk personal money, only paper money, assets they have that the bank can re claim. The owls are currently in debt, but to buy them is relativly straight forward, pay off the co op, the previous board members, inc Mr Allen, ans pay off the share holders, ie the owls trust. In terms of business transactions, this is quite simple, therefor attractive to potential investors. The Inner cirle will have had other clubs vieing for there services whose buy outs will be far more complicated, therefor less appealing to a buyer, ergo, Inner circle thinks, no point. The amount Strafford and the owls will not be great to the bank, but a potential sale, and the interest gained, could be huge. so, on the fells, it has been done brilliantly and is a coup.

it would be more interesting if the names of the clubs who they turned down were published!

they could have been accrington stanley and wycombe wanderers, as opposed to Aston Villa and Arsenal, so for them having a championship club rather than a club lower in the league would be better for them to market

but as I've mentioned investors will see QPR and be very wary of investing money in a club that isnt already established in the top flight!

AB - you could be right - the other clubs could have been lower down.

However, if you check out their transaction history on their website (Real Madrid, Liverpool and most recently Sunderland) we are the only football club they have represented outside the top flight of their respective country.

I have to laugh at the legal understanding of some Sheffield United fans (Teves affair boo hoo say no more), you just can't publicly go around brandishing statements about which football clubs got turned down. If this was not true then you could be facing slander charges. All you can confirm to the press is which teams have used Inner Circle. So what that we have the potential to turn around our fortunes a little more, after all i think we have more chance of getting it with Strafford on board than in the past. Positive thinking leads to positive things....... it worked a week last monday :)
