DERBY County could ask Sheffield United to include Jon Stead as a makeweight in a deal to take Robert Earnshaw to Bramall Lane.
The Wales international striker, who emerged as a possible target for Kevin Blackwell earlier this week, is also attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, with Pride Park chairman Adam Pearson confirming that the newly promoted side are the only team to meet his £2.5 million valuation.

Blackwell, who agreed a three-year contract as United manager earlier this month, has so far showed no sign of matching that fee.

But, having admitted that several players are likely to leave South Yorkshire when the transfer window re-opens later this summer, he could be tempted to offer a member of his squad in exchange.

If so, then Stead is likely to be the name Derby target as they look to rebuild after a disastrous season in the Premier-ship.

Rob Hulse's name has also been mentioned in some quarters as a possible bargaining chip.

But Blackwell recently confirming that the 28-year-old remains an integral part of his plans, and Paul Jewell, his counterpart in the East Midlands, could now turn his attention to former Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers striker Stead.

Stead has interested Derby in the past and spent time there on loan before joining United in January 2007.

Jewell said: "We have agreed a fee with Nottingham Forest for £2.5m and Rob Earnshaw is speaking to them.

"I think it's a fair price. It's a loss of £1.1m over a year but I want to change things around quite drastically and everyone has a price."

Meanwhile, Paddy Kenny has insisted that United will realise their potential next season.

Revealing the positive effect Blackwell's appointment has had on team morale, the goal keeper said: "Once Blacky came in, everyone was buzzing.

"He is in a similar mould to Neil Warnock, and the players have a great understanding with him.

"So hopefully next season should bring what everyone wants and expects for Sheffield United - promotion."

An excellent run of form towards the end of the season saw United go to Southampton on the final day of the campaign with an outside chance of qualifying for the play-offs. Kenny added: "After Christmas things picked up ."

United are holding a community day at Bramall Lane on Sunday between 9.30am and 4pm. Entry is free.

I am sorry to say that wheras Rob Hulse played great upto the incident with the Chelsea keeper, since his return he has been a shadow of his former self. If I had the choice I would keep Stead and let Hulse go.

I dont want Rob Hulse or John Stead to leave bramall lane, nor do i want rob earnshaw in. we dont need no more strikers we need midfielders.

This is all papertalk, lets leave it to the Gaffer to make the changes he feels we need and back him whichever way he goes.According to the Nottingham Evening Post, all Earnshaw has to do is sign the contract

i really dont want Jon Stead to leave, he is a fantastic player when given the chance to play, he gives it 100%. I dont like Earnshaw, he is big headed, we have far better players already at the lane.

I think stead is one of the best strikers at the lane, when he gets to come on in a game he always gives it his everything 100% effort. I would rather have stead than hulse like at the last game of the season against southmapton hulse played around 75 mins then stead came on for the last 15 mins and went and scored what more do you need to say, hulse will never be as good as he were before he broke his leg.

I have to agree Rob Hulse doesn't appear to have got over his terrible leg break, when you consider how good he was in the premier league most blades agree if he had been available for the rest of that season united would have stayed up. for me stead did no wrong in the premier either and was not given a fair chance this season, i don't want to have a go at Billy Sharp but if Stead had played in that many games i believe his goal tally would have been far greater, sell Hulse, webber, sharp, shelton pursuade stead to stay and buy a quality striker like Nugent with him, beattie and stead goals would flow

I agree. i think Stead is a great player and can be used as a wide man not just up front. he knows what service the strikers need and gives 100% let webber go as hes never fit, shelton can also go as he hasnt got what it takes. with the money we would get for them we should try to strengthen the midfield not the attackers.
