BRIAN Laws began loan deadline day with mixed emotions today – hopeful of landing two players but worried about losing them to late bids by rival clubs.
The Owls manager has been trying to conduct his moves in strictest confidence until deals are done.

Last season Alan Lee was on his way to Sheffield by road to complete a loan move from Crystal Palace but after a late intervention from Norwich he
did a U-turn and went there instead.

Recently, Laws has contacted every Premier League club, plus other managers, in a long and complicated search where he has had to negotiate hard with the limited amount of money he has available for wages.

Even in the last 48 hours he has lost out on a player when the player decided to stay where he was.

Laws has also been worried that if rivals get to know his targets then he could be outbid by clubs capable of paying to the lending club a bigger slice of the player's wages than that agreed so far with him.

But today he was still hoping to sign a midfield player from a top-flight club who can play in the centre or out wide, and a striker from a Championship outfit, before the 5pm deadline.

The Owls have cashed in on Richard Wood and have let Akpo Sodje go out on loan to get games. It also looks almost certain that Tommy Miller will miss Saturday's big match against West Brom because of his hamstring injury.

Laws said: "We're down to 19 players, and that includes three goalkeepers. I have been pushing hard to get a couple of players in, to give us strength in depth and competition."

Speculation has included Stoke midfield man Tom Soares, Leicester striker DJ Campbell and, in his native Northern Ireland, Cardiff forward Warren Feeney.

- Sheffield Wednesday are urging youngsters to study sport in an innovative new learning scheme.

Wednesday Community Programme has joined forces with Luis Michael Training and Sparsholt College to set up the Apprenticeship in Sports Leadership qualification.

The course, which will take place over 26 weeks, is a recognised sports qualification and Owls supporters can enroll in the initiative from December 5.

The project is open to anyone aged 16, 17 and 18 who is not in full-time education. Enrolment is 11am-2pm and those who register will be treated to lunch and will receive a ticket for the Reading match that day.

Miller missing again - suprise! Saying that he is anonomous when he plays anyway! Straight out of the Jeffers and Lenny mold!

Loan signings - not going to happen - you read it here first! Why are we down to 16 players - we have very few 'I's' at the moment, so where is everyone? Is it just that the likes of Maca and EE who could do a job are being sidelined for Miller? What is going on? Maybe if BL's had a bit more about him - bit more drive than a wet thrump say, we may have seized the moment and got many more of these loan players in instead of letting them go on de-tours on their way up!

Brian Laws claimed to be making signings and as I said earlier, I will believe it when it happens. Is he a complete fantasist? Short of players so he lets Richard Wood and Akpo Sodje go out on loan - brilliant management. What is Lee Strafford doing about this mis-management and lack of funds for players - not a lot!

More drivel from Kenn the Owl everyone!

He's trying pal, give him a break. He's got next to no money to offer as a loan incentive and will likely only be able to pay a portion of a loan player's wages. This is not attractive for the club loaning a player out. Any player we can afford may not be suitable for our club. We don't just want someone to make up the numbers, do we now? The amount of player's available that are affordable and are what we are looking for will be minimal at best. Plus, they'd hardly want to come to Hillsborough.

As for Wood and Sodje going on loan; do you just look at facts on the face of it or do you ever dig a little deeper? Sodje was clearly unfit and needed match practice. He has looked a shadow of his former self this season and has been really quite poor. The match practice he gets at Charlton will be invaluable. As for Wood, he's on his way out of the club - what's the point in keeping him? We don't even need a defender! If we're going to get some money for him then we may as well go with what Coventry want and let them have him 'til January.

And berating Lee Strafford, well done sir. Would you rather we went back to the old regime? I for one would tell Allen to stick his cash and we'll much it with someone who's got at least half a brain cell that helps to run a club correctly.

Christ, some people have short memories.

Have we progressed in the three years since Sturrock was sacked? No! The further into this season we go the more desprate we seem to become. Fact is that BL's has lost the confidence of many fans and probably the dressing room and for this reason a command decision to get rid must be made. I hear the bleeting coming from so many saying we cannot afford to pay him off, but can we afford another trip into League 1, particularly with so many well paid under-performing players? If the situation does not improve before xmas then he must go.

Is it true we have signed Feeney from Cardiff? If so this is a sorry indication of how low we have sunk.

Hmm, as if I'm going to take advice from a Blade...

To all those who are whinging about Laws, if we were to get rid of him now, who do you propose we replace him with? And be realistic. The only name out there that's either available or who might be interested in coming that I would like is Nigel Pearson, and I don't think he'd leave Leicester when they're doing so well. I'd be intriuged to hear your suggestions...
