GOLFER Danny Willett holed a top honour at The Star and St John Sports Awards.
He won the Young Achiever 2008, sponsored by The Green Un.

The award category highlighted the success of amateurs and professionals, aged under-24.

Willet, from Hackenthorpe, Sheffield, was this year ranked the world's number one amateur golfer.

He won the Spanish Amateur Championship, the Australian Amateur Stroke Play Championship and in 2007 the English Amateur Championship.

The 20-year-old has now progressed to the professional stage and is set to become a major player.

The glittering Edge Telecom sponsored Sports Awards, hosted at Sheffield's Ponds Forge by BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd, recognised sporting excellence of all kinds – with the spotlight also on amateurs and business, as well as OIympic heroes, football superstars, boxing idols, cricket legends and other sporting greats.

Other finalists for the Young Achiever Award, sponsored by The Green Un, were:

Abdirisak Ahmed: This 17-year-old was recently named Young Athelete of the Year. With a host of medals to his name he was selected to compete for England in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India. A real star in the making for the London 2012 Olympics.

Hannah Lawrence: At just 19, she is the 2008 British Women's Epee Fencing Champion after a sensational performance at EIS Sheffield. She won the 2008 East Midlands Ladies Epee title, the Nottingham Open and the Sheffield Open. Based at Chesterfield's Wingerworth Fencing Club, she will be hoping for great things at the London Olympics.
