DONCASTER Rovers' director of football, Mickey Walker, claims that the club got it right when deciding to remain loyal to last season's squad.
"I know that some people were panicking a bit during the summer because Sean (O'Driscoll) hadn't brought in a lot of new players after winning promotion, but that was never the intention," said Walker.

"Had he done that it would have changed the complexion of the team and that's not the way to do it.

"If you look back in history you will find that teams who have good players, and who have stuck together for a few years, have generally done well.

"People sometimes forget that football is a team game. If players know what every other player is doing, and they are well coached, they improve year on year. That is what is happening at the club right now and I am pleased.

"We've climbed a level but we've not changed the way we play and that is why people give us respect. Once we get the ball it is very difficult to get it back of us.

"What makes me very confident about the way that we play is that when we are under pressure we are still able to do that due to people like Richie Wellens, Brian Stock and James Coppinger.

"We have got some very talented players who can play at this level and they have shown that in our first two games in the Championship.

"We had a very good win at Derby on the opening game of the season and we were very unlucky not to beat Cardiff on Saturday.

"It was very disappointing to only draw the game after being in front with only two minutes to go. But that's football and there will be a time in the season when we'll do exactly the same."

Although Walker is keeping his feet on the ground, and is not about to get carried away after just two games, he says that he is hopeful of the club's unbeaten start continuing at Loftus Road on Saturday.

"It would be nice to come back with something in the shopping bag from our trip to London and I would like to think that will be the case when we play Queens Park Rangers," he said.

An early goal by midfielder John Spicer secured a Rovers XI a 1-0 win in yesterday's behind-closed-doors friendly against Chesterfield at Saltersgate.

Rovers decided against risking striker Jason Price in the game played in three thirty minute periods.

Midfielder Brian Stock has pulled out of the Wales side to play Georgia in tonight's friendly at Swansea following a recurrence of the back problem which troubled in the build-up to the game at Derby.
