GLEN Little, the former Reading and Portsmouth winger, will spend the next two weeks training with Sheffield United.
The 33-year-old, whose contract at Fratton Park expires this morning, is expected to report for pre-season training at Shirecliffe on Friday before travelling to Malta with Kevin Blackwell's side.

Little will be joined in the Mediterranean by another winger - Kyel Reid - after the South Yorkshire club confirmed he was due to undergo a medical at Bramall Lane at lunchtime.

The United manager told The Star: "Glen is going to be spending some time with us and we'll see how things go.

"He'll be coming in with the rest of the lads and then he'll be coming abroad with us too."

News that Reid, previously of West Ham, is finally set to complete his protracted transfer from Upton Park brings to an end speculation about his long-term future.

Like Little, he is a free agent.

Blackwell added last night: "Kyel is an exciting player with bags of potential. He's got the extra advantage of being very quick."

Reid's presence, combined with United's decision to offer Little a trial, confirms Blackwell wants to inject extra width into a squad which finished third in the Championship and reached the play-off final last season.

Little signed a 12-month agreement with Portsmouth in the summer of 2008 but spent the closing stages of the campaign on loan at the Madejski Stadium.

He and Reid could make their first appearance in United colours against Floriana next Friday.

United had initially been scheduled to face Maltese champions Hibernians but their involvement in European qualification has prompted a change of opponents.

Floriana, the island's best-supported club, recently appointed Roddy Collins as their new manager.

So he's over 30, big deal. If he is up to it he would be a quality signing. He's got bags of skill and can chip in with goals as well but of course it all depends on how well he does on trial.

He can also provide valuable experience but these are all maybes

Stan Mathews retired at 50 years old and his only regret was that he retired too soon. Same with Bobby Charlton at 39 who said he wasted too much effort on the training ground trying to prove he was still as fit as the young lads in the team.
Point is we (hopefully) don't have to rely on 30 something free transfers that nobody else wants. If he is as good as the much older Eg and Speed were last season he will be OK. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Ps I'm available for a trial in Malta next week under the best medical care and in top class accommodation playing football all the time.

Shez the average age of the Blades SQUAD is under 27, (just over 27 if you count Speed)

the guy is on trial (a bit like that guy who has played for hull, and qualifies for a trial (despite having played most of his career in the lower leagues & non league) just becuase he is a Wednesday fan!

at least our trialist has had more than a handful of games against top flight teams!

steggers obviously its dried up...., with our £1m big for Surnam our £1.5m bid for Ched Evans, what ever will we do, I guess we'll have to do a Wednesday and draft in someone who couldnt make the cut the first time, and sign him up. after all the only ones who want to go to your club now a days are those who are fans if he's not in the team I guess he can always make a start on the painting haha!
