Stock cars had left the track full of potholes, and several riders escaped serious injury after crashing, with a heart-stopping moment for home skipper Andre Compton.
He was speared by Vikings' Robbie Kessler when the German hit a rut on the fourth turn as the Tigers star was trying to pass on the outside.
Compton was able to pick himself up, win the rerun and secure a five-ride maximum to lead a comfortable win for Sheffield.
Rising star Tai Woffinden hit the same patch in heat 10 and slammed into the fence. He was also fit to continue.
Tigers' Sam Martin and Hull's Emiliano Sanchez and Paul Thorp all crashed at the same spot. But both teams staged terrific racing.
Compton produced a spectacular third-to-first burst in the last race against Joel Parsons and British U18 and U21 champion Woffinden.
A new starting gate system, giving the trailing team any choice of positions, meant Hull managed to keep the score tight until the late stages.
Tigers' Ricky Ashworth notched double figures in a solid all-round team effort.
Sheffield rider Parsons swapped sides to appear in his former colours, and was best for Vikings, with good support from Woffinden and reserve Lee Dicken.
Tigers: A. Compton 15, R. Ashworth 11, B. Wilson 8, P. Cooper 6+1, L. Smethills 6, J. Birkinshaw 5+1, S. Martin 1.
Hull: J. Parsons 10, T. Woffinden 8+1, L. Dicken 7+1, R. Kessler 6, B. Evans 5+2, E. Sanchez 1, P. Thorp 0.
