DONCASTER Rugby League Club No 2 Tony Miller heaped praise on skipper Peter Green in the aftermath of his side's disappointing 36-16 National League Two defeat at Oldham last night.
Loose-forward Green led from the front and scored the first of the Dons' three tries and their only touchdown in a mistake-riddled first half.
"Pete gave an outstanding performance once again," said Miller. "He produces 100 per cent every week, and he's a great captain. He leads by example and if more players would only follow his lead we would be all the better for it."
Miller pointed to Doncaster's inability to cut out errors and complete their sets of six tackles as one of the main reasons for a defeat which will inevitably hit their hopes of striving for automatic promotion.
"I thought both teams were poor in the first half," he said. "If either side had playing anything like in the first 40 they would probably have taken a healthy lead. We made far too many unforced errors, as did Oldham.
"We spoke about it at half-time, and considered how costly it was proving. But we went out in the second half and carried on in the same way, while Oldham tightened up and improved. That was the main difference between the sides in the second half.
"We didn't build enough pressure or enjoy enough good field position to give our half-backs enough of a say or to put Oldham under real and sustained pressure. We didn't spend enough time in their third of the field. We still came up with a lot of errors in the second half .
"There were a couple of times when the bounce of the ball favoured Oldham, but we can have no complaints about the result."
Hooker Corey Lawrie retired hurt after scoring his 75th-minute try in the corner, but Miller could shed no light on either the nature or the extent of the injury. He said the team had come through the game relatively unscathed.
With the number of matches in hand that Doncaster have to make up ,that could prove to be a huge plus on a night when there were not many of those from their perspective.
By comparison, Oldham, who have still to play Doncaster again, were seriously in the wars with stand-off Ian Hodson suffering a broken nose and concussion; centre Craig Littler breaking his jaw; and workaholic prop Jason Boults damaging medial ligaments in a knee.
