JESSICA Ennis opened her outdoor season in this crucial Olympic year with a personal best in the javelin.
In the Festival of Athletics meeting at Don Valley, the City of Sheffield star threw 40.06 in the opening round to improve her previous mark by two metres. Her next effort, 39.54, also beat her previous best and she had a third round throw of 37.85.

Coach Toni Minichiello was pleased with the result, especially in the bitterly cold conditions, but pointed out that it was only worth 38 more points in the heptathlon.

However, there is little doubt that, with the continuing help from World medallist Mick Hill, she can improve her javelin further and will do that event for her club in the opening match of the Northern League on May 3.

Following that she will compete in the Yorkshire Championships at Don Valley on May 10, the Loughborough International meeting on May 18 before a crucial heptathlon in Gotzis, Austria in May.

In the Sheffield meeting, Hallamshire pair Andrew Heyes (under 20 men) and Julia Russell (senior women) both had impressive middle distance doubles in the 800 metres and mile whilst talented City of Sheffield athlete Joe Anderson won three field events in the under 13 section.

There was also a treble from Sheffield's Joe Hobson in the youngest age group, the under 11 section.
