SHEFFIELD Steelers are aiming to quit the city and become tenants of a planned 5,000-seater twin-pad ice rink at Rother Valley Country Park.
The ice hockey club - which has had frosty relations with their Sheffield Arena home since 1991 over dates and rent prices - hope to move into Rotherham borough in around 2010.

Their rink is envisaged as part of the £350m Yes! (Yorkshire Entertainment Sensation) project - blueprinted as the "biggest undercover leisure and entertainment destination" in Europe.

Oak Holdings Plc, the developers, says Steelers will be an anchor tenant which will help the profile and drive new business to the centre, which has received outline planning permission for 327 acres of former coalfield in the north west corner of the Country Park.

Oak are confident that major names such as Eon and BT will have research centres at the American styled site, which will also house a convention centre, hotel, leisure, entertainment and spa facilities, bars, shops and restaurants.

Venture Extreme, the extreme sports company is to have a centre there - there are plans for an artificial rock face with a waterfall. High-tech golf driving range specialist Baydrive Group have also signed up. In all, around 3,000 jobs will be on offer, say the investors.

Oak and Steelers made public their plans today after Rotherham Council approved legal and financial "Heads of Terms" agreements.

This week Steelers officials visited the site of the proposed rink between Swallownest and Beighton.

They hope to sign a 25-year lease with Oak. Their club name will probably shortened to "The Steelers" - to avoid geographic confusion.

General manager Mike O'Connor "It is a fantastic opportunity for us.

"We'll have a business that operates 365 days a year and can engage with the community and schools a lot closer than we do now. It's all very exciting.

"We enjoyed playing at Broughton Lane, we have great memories of playing there and will continue to play there for a number of years.

"But as a business and as a sport we cannot stand still and we want to control our own destiny and play in a home we can call our own."

O'Connor hopes the switch from Sheffield won't upset fans who face having to travel further from suburbs in north and west of the city.

He said Rother Valley was "not that far from the present site and I think our fans will be excited by the prospect of playing on more suitable (weekend) dates.

"We will be able to control the dates we play. And I think that's the most important thing. I'm sure our fans will embrace it."

Speaking in an audio interview with The Star - which can be heard by clicking the green button above - he also implied lower ticket prices may be a sweetener for supporters.

He said Oak was "aware of what our financial commitment is now at Sheffield Arena" and negotiate a rent from that standpoint. He stressed: "What it does is let us operate a business 365 days a year.

"Instead of just staging 32 shows (games) a year. We will have two ice pads and be an anchor tenant alongside some reputable, blue chip companies.

"We have always wanted our own home, a place where we can have complete control of our business and financial stability.

"We have looked at a number of options around the region and stumbled across the Yes! project. We made inquiries of Oak Holdings and the discussions have been swift and fruitful."

There is nothing wrong with the Steelers going to Rother Valley- just as long as they dont use the name of Sheffield. As a mark of respect the team should refrain from using the city's from now on.

I also hope fans with any loyalty to Sheffield, stop attending games.

Rother Valley is bang on the boarder of sheffield and some of the park is even in sheffield so this move would cause no concerns. the site is close to junction 31 of the M1 and is just off the A57, 2 of sheffields major roads, so getting to games would be just as easy.this move shows forward thinking and sends a message out the the arena management that the Steelers will not be blackmailed and bullied.

Congratulations to the Steelers. I hope this helps them to stabilize the finances and do more in the community to develop ice hockey in the region and the UK.

Sheffield Arena & operators SIV are going to lose 32 games each year according to the article and with the reduced number of concerts the building may well struggle to survive having already lost the sponsorship it had from Hallam FM. Unfortunately, if you don't treat customers with the respect they deserve they move on and it seems that Steelers will do this if and when the new facility comes into being.

I wish Dave Simms and Mike O'Connor every success for the future and hope to be able attend Steelers games for many years to come in this City Region.

I can't see the sense of dropping SHEFFIELD from their title as it could alienate many of their current fans.

In football, Man United, Nottm Forest Scun United & Grimsby Town don't play in Manchester Nottingham Scunthorpe or Grimsby. They play just outside the boundary but still keep their names.

Get a grip. This is a great move by "The Steelers", as they have been known for many years.

We come from Chesterfield as season ticket holders and support the sport not the name.

Good luck, Bob, Mike and the developers. This wWILL be a success.

I'm glad the Steelers are going to get their own ice pad - it's been a long time in coming. I have been a supporter of the Steelers moreorless from the beginning. I personally dont see why they should drop the "Sheffield" from their name, because even though the new "pad" will be situated between Beighton and Swallownest, Beighton comes under "Sheffield" and Swallownest/Aston both have "Sheffield" dialling codes.

Good luck to all involved.

I think its brilliant that the Steelers are getting their own place! Its pretty exciting reading about all the things that are going to be built.. I don't mind the name changing because i've always referred to them as "Steelers" anyway other than putting "Sheffield" in front of it...
It is sort of saddening though because I've always been proud to support and live in the city where the most successful British ice hockey team is.
It is saddening to be leaving Hallam FM too.
Does anyone else feel like it is taking away our ice hockey team?
