£250,000 windfall for Owls

WEST Brom's promotion is worth £250,000 to Wednesday under the deal that took Chris Brunt to the Hawthorns.
The Northern Ireland winger was sold for £2.5 million plus £500,000 in unspecified add-on payments last August.

Albion have now revealed that the additional payments included £250,000 if they went up.

But it does not mean that the Owls suddenly have this as "extra" money.

For it is understood that they have already budgeted for receiving it and the sum will have been taken into account as the club plan their financial strategy.

The Owls cashed in on Brunt after he turned down a new deal and his contract with them was due to end this summer.

He scored in the last two games of the season - a 1-1 draw with Southampton and 2-0 victory against QPR - as Albion finished as champions and he ended with a goal tally of five, five fewer than he achieved for Wednesday last season.

Wednesday have already signalled that it is business as usual as they plan for next season, with no takeover under way yet.

But new investment would make a difference to the strategy

Meanwhile, Wednesday have begun the annual task of renovating the Hillsborough pitch, by taking off the turf that was put down as an emergency solution to last year's flooding.

The damage caused last summer left a legacy of problems and the club will welcome the chance to renovate the surface.

Head groundsman Steve Kiddy said: "We've removed the existing surface - around 10mm - off the whole pitch and turned it over four inches deep. It's mainly to dry the whole underneath out.

"It's going really well; the weather has been great for us. We've not had a drop of rain, and the longer it can stay dry while it's turned over the better.

"We need another 24 hours, then we'll start the levelling process and get some seeds down by the end of the week."

Owls young pros Liam McMenamin and Dave McClements are away on Northern Ireland Under-20 duty.

They are in the squad for games against Luxembourg and Metz today and tomorrow.

250.000 grand, am so over the moon. if we had kept whelen, brunt bougerra, mclean then we could have got prompted and made 40 million pound by doing this, but 250.000, we can buy sub standard players and struggle next season again, great management by our club again. going nowhere

That's exactly the point. But in the present climate I dont think any of these players wanted to be at Wednesday. Can you blame them? How BL has stood it is beyond me. What we do have left we will be lucky to keep next season. I think the take-over is a dream and reality is the nightmare! More of the same with the same in charge.

come on guy's i know it's hard but stop all the negativity .
forget any thoughts of a takeover if that happens well it happens .
lets concentrate on those rare few gems we have occupying berths 1 to 5 and then include mcallister .
don't sell them at any cost and add a sprinkling of young , but mature talent to this crop and who knows what we might end up with .
i will be placing this or a similiar comment to any relevant listing this summer in the hope that the powers that be will LISTEN !!

If you think the Owls board wont sell their best players then you are in a dreamland. History of this board shows they wont hesitate to cash in on any player if a decent offer comes in. So get ready for the same as this last season. Brian Laws should go get a real job with a club wanting to go places. And fans should show their disgust in the only way they can - Season tickets?

trueviews you need to give it a rest .
i pay the equivelent price of a season ticket every 4 home games i go to .
thats 4 tickets x 2 for me amd mrs penrhyn bay plus petrol from north wales and back plus food etc etc and i don't and will never see that as a problem as i consider it a buzz to watch my beloved wednesday and have done since '68 when it was by train and bus !!
for heavens sake lets try the optimistic route rather than the doom and gloom path of late .
let's face it you are probably only 5 mins from the pub after defeat , i'm 3 hours from home before i can start to drown my sorrow's !!
dreamland maybe , tightarse never !

Optimism is great but whilst ever we have this board and whoever is still pulling the strings in the background we are doomed to more of the same.
