HOW unbearably ironic, inconceivably coincidental that the final Championship fate of Sheffield Wednesday might be in the hands of Sheffield United.
For the Blades to have any chance of catching the play-offs bandwagon they have to keep Wednesday up - and hope for a last-day miracle or two.
If United lose at St Mary's Wednesday have to drag themselves out of the mire with a win against Norwich - unless Leicester do them a favour and lose to Stoke at the Brittania Stadium.
The horrible thing is that Wednesday can lose and still stay up if the other results go their way.
Imagine the terror of those waiting for the final scores to come in, sweaty ears pressed against radios all over the kop.
A draw and they're down if Leicester and Southampton win.
All this can make your brain hurt if you dwell on it.
Suffice to say that if Wednesday beat Norwich - a team whose players have nothing to play for except to get on the the retain list for next season - they are safe.
You can't help feeling though that there's going to be a twist at the death.
Which probably won't happen at the other end of the table where United have made a late run to the play-off fringes.
I don't suppose it will be much comfort to Wednesday fans if they go down to think that they stopped United getting into the play-offs by taking four points from them in derby games.
And it wouldn't be any consolation to Blades fans to know that their although defeat at Southampton robbed them of a play-off place it also sent Wednesday down.
Or maybe it would.
Meanwhile, it was a truly uplifting experience. To see all the local managers - bar one- get on stage and sing along to New York, New York in honour of the late Derek Dooley at The Star football awards on Monday night.
They were called upon for an impromptu sing-song with Frank Sinatra and the other 270-odd guests to one of Derek's favourite tunes and the one he sang on the pitch at Bramall Lane after United were promoted to the Premiership.
Not everyone was keen and it was a shame no-one from the Sheffield United contingent joined in but it was a manful effort by the lads up there and it gave an excellent night a warm glow at the end.
