SOME players drift off silently, others get a more worthy send-off.
Dion Dublin surely could not have expected the farewell he got from over 36,000 at Hillsborough last Sunday. It was a wonderful reception, full of respect for a splendid professional in his farewell appearance.

The two young men breathing a big sigh of relief and probably grateful he's not a few years younger, would have been Richard Wood and Mark Beevers.

They have been properly lauded for their efforts in Wednesday's survival battle and tipped to go on to bigger things, particularly young Beevers from Barnsley.

On Sunday, for the best part of the hour or so Dublin was on, they were given a real lesson.

In fact, the big man provided a first half masterclass in leading the line and he led them a right ta-ta.

There were times when they knew not whether to stick or twist. But they will only be the better for it, surely.

Equally adept too was Wednesday's own Deon - Deon Burton who was outstanding in the team's hour of need.

The "bottle" to take the penalty after missing the previous week cannot be underestimated. Two experienced "centre-forwards" produced two outstanding and memorable individual performances.

Not sure why I should receive an e-mail about air travel to Moscow for the Champions League final.

Not that I could afford the trip anyway considering the way the costs are mounting, not least with people realising they can make a few roubles out of desperate fans.

One set of Chelsea fans have cut out the hotel cost altogether.

They have chartered a 148-seat aircraft to fly to Moscow, wait at the airport and then fly back straight after the match (which will not finish until about 12.45am Moscow time assuming there is no extra-time).

Don't know what they are paying but the company say: "There are options left to get to Moscow with prices starting at £4,000 per seat for a luxury private jet." I think I'll give that one a miss.

One 14-seater private jet has been chartered by eight Manchester United fans and four Chelsea fans (it doesn't say who the other two travellers support) which should make for an interesting return journey.

It is too late for anyone hoping to fly British Airways. The last of their seats to Moscow - £900 for one way - went some time ago.

There's a Derek Dooley query from Mr B Burkinshaw of High Green who used to watch him for the Owls.

But it is Reserves team matters concerning him because Mr Burkinshaw asks: "I feel pretty sure when he was in the Reserves that there was a bigger gate than a lot of teams in The Championship get today."

It seems that Mr Burkinshaw's family are a touch disbelieving about his claim and asks if I can help.

Well, Reserves team attendances are particularly difficult to ascertain but the query may have been a reference to a Reserves team derby Derek played against the Blades at Bramall Lane in 1952.

Wednesday had just been promoted to the top flight, not started too well and Derek was dropped into the Reserves in a bid to regain his goal touch.

It so happened it was at Bramall Lane and a crowd of 8,531 turned up to see him score twice in a 3-1 win for the Owls.

They have the first leg of their Play-off semi-final tonight, but one "Doncaster Rover" has already had a win this week and let us hope it is a good omen for Rovers against Southend.

The Rover in question is a two-year old racehorse which, running at Chester this week in its second outing, won at 3-1.

The jockey was none other than Frankie Dettori wearing Doncaster Rovers colours and, apparently, when they got round to naming it, the owners asked permission of Rovers chairman John Ryan if they could call it
Doncaster Rover.
