You can't Beat humble pie and a glass of champagne

THE HUMBLE pie recipe is out, the hair shirt pressed, sackcloth and ashes on stand-by.

Just in case.

In case I have to eat the pie, wear the shirt and do whatever it is you do with sackcloth and ashes when you have made a complete a**e of yourself.

On January 15, 2009 in this column I said that without James Beattie Sheffield United would be no better than Wednesday, that having James Beattie in the side would make the difference between promotion and mediocrity.

Both sets of fans were in touch to put me straight in no uncertain terms, bless 'em.

But it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Not so now.

Beattie left and United dipped a bit but they rallied and started chipping in with goals from all over the pitch.

They shrugged off the loss of the former England striker, signed Craig Beattie and Arturo Lupoli, Steven Quinn kept coming up with the goods and the club broke its own record for the highest number of goalscorers in the squad in a season.

United have worked their socks off through good form and not so good and got themselves into a position where they have a great chance of going up with a win on the last day of the season.

And what a last day. All those squeaky bums all over the country.

Much attention has been focused on Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock in the press and the irony that he might stop the club he supported as a boy from being promoted if his current team wins on Sunday. The truth is it's nothing to do with Neil Warnock any more.

It's going to be down to Kevin Blackwell and his 14 players to pull a result out of the fire and hope that Reading take something from Birmingham City.

That would get the Champagne flowing for the Blades and any bitter taste will soon fade for Neil Warnock.

With humble pie, however, the bad taste tends to linger a little longer.
