TEAM GB started the Olympics with a win last night.

The women’s football team beat New Zealand 1-0 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Steph Houghton scored the winner.

The men’s team plays Senegal tonight at Old Trafford.

Sheffield’s Rachel Laybourne has no problem with the beach volleyball players, including former University of Sheffield student Zara Dampney receiving more attention than the indoor squad.

She said: “We were walking in Westfield and the police stopped us and assumed we were beach volleyball players.

“They just assumed from our kit. But it does not distract us from our game. We like the association and it raises the profile of volleyball.”

Amy Oliver will be South Yorkshire’s first Olympian tomorrow afternoon at 1pm when she takes part in the archery competition at Lord’s cricket ground. Oliver, aged 25, is from Mexborough.
