SHEFFIELD United manager Danny Wilson has refused to rule out the possibility of bringing Matt Phillips and Billy Clarke back to Bramall Lane.
Speaking ahead of today’s FA Cup first-round tie with Oxford, Wilson confirmed the Blackpool duo could re-join the South Yorkshire club for a second spell on loan despite returning to Bloomfield Road earlier this week.
United, who yesterday unveiled John Stephenson as head of football operations, have been informed unofficially the duo could be named in Ian Holloway’s squad for next Saturday’s Championship fixture at Middlesbrough.
But Wilson said: “I’ve
still not spoken to Ian but what I’m hearing is they’re going back to be a part of things. We’ve got a fortnight until our next league game so we’ll see if there’s any movement because even a week is a long time in football.
“If there is then that could be good for us.”
Phillips scored six goals in seven appearances for United, with Clarke contributing one and five assists.
Wilson, who admitted he tried and failed to sign an outfield player on loan following Tuesday’s John-
stone’s Paint Trophy defeat by Bradford City, has challenged youngster Ryan Flynn to help fill the void created by their departures.
Stephenson, who previously worked at Brighton, Watford, Celtic and Reading, will be responsible for helping Wilson re-shape United’s playing staff, according to chief executive Justin Winter. “We appointed John because we believe he has ability and experience to help shape our business in an appropriate fit-for-purpose way to sustain the future of this great club,” Winter said.
