Walker out at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday today sensationally parted company with Chief Executive Kaven Walker.

The Board said that the move - which nobody had seen coming - had been by mutual consent.

The Owls recently appointed Sheffield businessmen Lee Strafford and Nick Parker as new board members to help the club work towards a major new investment and Walker's departure is understood to be a part of the process.

The club said: "We would like to express on record our thanks to Mr Walker for his diligent efforts over past years.

"Current Director Nick Parker will take on a greater role in the day to day running of the club. He will be assisted by the current management team.

"The Board would like to make it clear to all fans that this news will have no effect on the club's dealings in the January transfer window. Nor will it adversely impact on the process of delivering new investment to the club."

Walker, recently, had seen to be mounting what some had described as a "charm offensive" - trying to win back community support from fans who sometimes disagreed with the way the club was run.

Earlier this month he said: "We want to embrace the fans. I'll work with the fans, bring the ideas to the table, sit down and discuss them.

"I have a number of meetings set up with individuals who have concerns about certain things."

Walker has been a controversial figure with some supporters, though. An on-line petition calling for his head was posted in September.

And former manager Paul Sturrock said he was sacked by the club - claiming he got the boot because he rowed with the executive.

Walker, who has a background in the retail industry, first joined the Owls from Derby in January 2000 as commercial director and was appointed chief executive in March 2005.

He had previously worked on the commercial team at Liverpool.

Wednesday's board announced at their annual general meeting earlier this month that talks were under way with potential new investors which could lead to a takeover of the club.

The new-look board have set a target of March 31 next year to conclude negotiations with "a four-man consortium" which is keen to invest in the Owls, who are currently around 25million in debt. Details of who they are have yet to be released.
