Varney's plus factor as Sheffield Wednesday home in

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are undaunted by their defeat at Nottingham Forest as they head into a spell of three consecutive home matches, says goal ace Luke Varney.

The striker believes that the Owls have only themselves to blame for Forest's winner though a harsh penalty decision had left them with an uphill task.

But they head into tomorrow's Hillsborough clash with Blackpool with confidence blossoming thanks to the impact of Alan Irvine, says the man who scored his third goal in two games, in the 2-1 defeat at the City Ground.

"With the mentality that the gaffer had instilled is us, we believe we can get a result anywhere," said Varney.

"We deserved at least a point against Forest - and we fancied our chances going into the game.

"Now we've got three home games in a row; we'll be looking to force the issue.

"We'll regroup. We're a confident group and I'm sure we'll put it right on Tuesday."

Wednesday were unfortunate to go one down to a penalty awarded for handball against Darren Purse but Varney said there was a dressing-room inquest about Forest's winner: "First we conceded the free kick then we didn't defend it. We won't put the blame on anyone; we defend as a team.

"It's frustrating, We played really well. We think we should have won. We thought we were the better side.

"The ref put us on the back foot. We were devastated. The ball just hit Darren. It wasn't intentional handball. We're really cheesed off.

"It was nice for me to score again - but I'd rather have three points."

Wednesday have no game on Saturday because opponents West Brom are playing in the FA Cup. The Owls face Doncaster at home a week tomorrow and Ipswich the following Saturday.

Blackpool must head for Hillsborough without captain and star midfielder Charlie Adam who must serve an automatic two-match ban after picking up his 10th booking of the season against Leicester.
