TUESDAY: Sheffield Wednesday romp home - but defender hurt
Owls: Sheffield Wednesday news, reports and more with The Star.
A BRACE OF goals from Chris O’Grady led Sheffield Wednesday to a welcome 3-1 win over Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park this evening.
It put Wednesday level in League One, with Sheffield United and Huddersfield, on 53 points from 27 games.
But a potentially serious injury to Daniel Jones gave Gary Megson another defensive headache and left a blemish on the result.
Wednesday had taken an immediate stranglehold on the game when striker O’Grady found the back of the net in the first minute, following set-up play from Miguel Angel Llera.
Scunny tried to shrug off the shock and get back in it, but a header from the same visiting forward made it 2-0 in the 17th minute.
The chance had been engineered by Liam Palmer and had the noisy away support in raptures.
It was all positive for the dominating Owls, especially with the intelligent Jose Semedo controlling much of centre midfield.
Scunthorpe were strangely passive - and Wednesday took advantage with a much more confident and bullish approach.
Yet Megson’s men had to overcome a blow before half time when Jones was stretchered off, to be replaced by Mark Beevers.
The 6ft 3ins defender suffered what looked like a serious injury.
However O’Grady almost had a hat-trick, the 25-year-old Leicester-born forward being foiled by a save from young keeper Sam Slocombe.
Wednesday only had to wait until the 46th minutes for their next goal - and what a goal it was.
Jermaine Johnson went on a run from the half way line, skinned his full back and shot low into the net.
But Iron finally managed to get their act together as manager Alan Knill changed his tactics and his players responded.
Ssuddenly it was Megson looking frustrated in his technical area as former Sheffield United youth team player Jordan Robertson found space to nod the ball into back on 54 minutes.
Johnson remained his enigmatic self - he fashioned an excellent chance to put the game beyond doubt with the minutes ticking away but made a hash of his final contact.
Pity - it would have been another marvellous strike for the Jamaican, who later suffered a painful bout of cramp.
Teams:
IRON: Slocombe, Ribeiro, Canavan, Reid, Nolan, Walker, Togwell, O’Connor, Thompson, Robertson, Barcham.
Subs: Lillis, Wright, Mozika, Duffy, Grant.
OWLS: Bywater, Otsemobor, Batth, Llera, D Jones, Palmer, Lines, Semedo, J Johnson, O’Grady, Madine.
Subs: Weaver, Beevers, M Jones, Morrison, Lowe.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 09:14 AMMarnin dudes! I think I slept with a grin on my face last night. Woke up with cheeks like a greedy hamster. What can we say about JJ that's not already been said? He is a world beater on his day & can transform a poor team into a half decent team or a half decent team into a very good team. Unfortunately he does not always respond well to the kind of pressure that's put on him when he is expected to transform games on his own and the rest of the team always has to be on its toes because he can always press the self destruct button when you least expect it. In the pre season games before he got injured he looked fantastic & is only just showing that kind of form since he came back, but wow is it worth waiting for. Hopefully he, Lines & O'Grady can keep the results ticking over until Madine is firing on all cylinders, but it would be nice to see those two quality players that GM is after just to help share the load. We should not get too carried away with this result, goal.com had this game down as a big win for Wednesday with more than 3.5 goals scored. Well done lads. UTFO!

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 08:28 AMIts tough at the top as the saying goes If Wednesday can avoid long term injuries and get rid of that silly practice of giving points away in the dying minutes of the game we shall be in contention Could be the most exciting finish to a season for many years

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 08:20 AMOur destiny is in our own hands now with games against the two sides we are level with. Good result last night. Not an easy place for us to go in the past. Hopefully we will build on this result and the fact JJ is on form......for the minute. Looking like the most exciting league as far as promotions are concerned. So much for it being the pub league.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 07:42 AMCome on the Mighty Owls, UTO, WTID, IYDFBTYAB, WAWAW? Now then JJ, what is your furkin game son? Just when Im ready to write you off again you do this. Keep it up will you, I dont think it is just his form that is the problem but the defence he is against, if they have an answer for his speed then he finds it hard to try something different.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 11:40 PMSB, Megson is a hero. Never in the last few years has a manager been so highly regarded by Owls fans. Perhaps agent Wilson will be a hero for your lot? Long way to go.
