LAST year’s runners-up, Craig Rumney and Hannah Brown of Pilkingtons Recreation, went one better this year to win the Doncaster Bowls Association’s Allan Haries Memorial Trophy at Brodsworth.

Their victory in the competition, for pairings consisting of one bowler over the age of 18 and one aged under 18, added to the Mixed Doubles title they won last season.

Rumney and Brown cruised through their first three games, conceding only 18 points, before coming up against father and son Andy and Adam Jones in the final.

Jones senior plays for Woodlands Park, while Adam has this season returned to his first club Denaby Welfare.

They had also had a comfortable win in their semi-final, so the final was too close to call.

The Jones pairing won three of the first four ends to lead 5-1. They moved to 10-3 and 16-4 five ends later, and it looked like another heavy defeat in the final for the Pilkingtons pair.

But a three at the next end stopped the rot, and although their opponents scored a two to lead 18-7, it was Rumney and Brown who now took control.

They are regular partners in the Doncaster Doubles League Division 1, and it showed as they won five ends without reply to close to 18-16 down, and despite losing the next end, they scored four more points to lead for the first time in the game, 20-19.

The Jones pair scored a single to level at 20-all, but it was Rumney and Brown who scored the decisive point for a 21-20 win which saw Rumney become only the second player to win this competition as both a junior and a senior.
