TOP seed Dave Grocock suffered a surprise second round League Singles defeat in the Doncaster Table Tennis Closed Championships at Danum School.

Grocock was beaten by Dhru Karwa, who himself was beaten in the next round in the section won by joint-No 3 seed Greg Barker (St Mary’s). No 2 seed Mick Thornley won through the other half of the draw but not before being forced to dig deep by Mick Scott - who had earlier beaten joint-third seed Peter France.

Thornley (Pegler) beat Barker 11-7, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7 in a very tight five-set match in the final.

Grocock had fared better the previous day serving up an 11-6, 11-4, 5-11, 11-8 win over second seed Thornley in the veterans’ Over-40s singles. John Peters (Peglers) beat Andy Dibdin (Blaxton) 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-6 in the veterans’ Over-55s singles final.

No 1 seed Chris Hazard (Pegler) also justified his No 1 ranking in the Under-18 Junior Singles, beating second seed Tom Wilkinson (St Mary’s) 11-9, 11-4, 7-11, 11-9.

Liam Wynn (St Mary’s) upset the odds in the Under-15s Junior Singles final when beating team-mate Conor Morris 11-9. 11-6, 11-9.

No 1 seeds Grocock and Thornley netted the League Doubles title, but not before being made to pull out all the stops by St Mary’s pairing Barker and Chris Senior. The Pegler duo won 11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10.

The Draw Doubles was won by Chris Hazard and Paul Morris, who got the better of Ruth Morgan and Andy Dibdin.

Ivan Beckett and Paul Konevod (YMCA) beat Phil Beresford and Brian Davis (YMCA) 19-21, 21-7, 21-19 in the League Handicap Doubles final. Tom Wilson posted a straight sets 21-8, 21-12 win over Paul Morris (South Kirkby) in the Premier Division Handicap Singles final.

Liam Wynn beat Adam Barrett (YMCA) in the First Division Handicap Singles final.
