Third mystery club moves in for Clarke

WEDNESDAY striker Leon Clarke is attracting interest from a third mystery club.

But a loan move for him and a possible signing by the Owls are on hold until next week.

Wednesday will reassess their injuries and the loan market before deciding on their next step.

Laws still wants to get an extra defender in but the lack of a game this week reduces the urgency and allows the Owls manager to wait and see how injured back-four men Tommy Spurr, Peter Gilbert and Richard Wood are faring.

There would also have been little point in Wednesday paying the wages of a loan signing this week, when they do not play again until the Sheffield derby a week on Sunday.

Hillsborough's shortage of funds makes it preferable that someone goes out on loan before a signing can be made.

Two clubs who fancied Clarke have been joined by a third but the suitors are believed to be from a lower division and are baulking at the player's wages. An extra factor in the equation is that Spurr – originally thought to be facing a long lay-off – should be out for no more than a month, and Laws is not ruling him out of the derby.

Spurr said: "The United game might come too soon, but who knows? I'd be disappointed if I missed that game.Hopefully the international break has come at the right time for me. Hopefully I'll be back quicker than expected.

". Looking on the positive side, Richard Wood and Peter Gilbert are coming along nicely, and Frankie Simek has started playing for the reserves."
