Sheffield’s Jonny Marray and doubles partner Dominic Inglot were made to work hard yesterday to progress to the last 16 of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

Marray, who is teaming up with Inglot for this tournament before resuming his partnership with Colin Fleming in preparation for the French Open later this month, was pushed all the way by American duo John Isner and Sam Querrey.

The British pair eventually came through 7-5 6-7(8) 12-10 in just over 100 minutes at the Foro Italico.

Marray and Inglot will now take on Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna for a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters Series event.

The Indian pair are seeded sixth for the tournament and are one of the most consistent partnerships on the Tour.

Britain’s No 1 women’s player Laura Robson will attempt to beat Serena Williams today just 24 hours after victory over Williams’ elder sister Venus.

Robson was in excellent form to win in straight sets 6-3 6-2 to set up a last 32 meeting with the world No 1 who won last week’s Mutua Madrid Open.
