SHEFFIELD’S Jonny Marray and doubles partner Colin Fleming face a vital Davis Cup doubles match today at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
Marray, on his debut for Great Britain, and Fleming will take on Igor Kunitsyn and Victor Baluda needing to win with the home team 2-0 down after the singles rubbers yesterday. Great Britain had the chance for an excellent day but both matches in five sets.
First Dan Evans fell just short of an upset as Dmitry Tursunov gave Russia a 1-0 advantage. Evans justified his late selection with an impressive display but it was not enough as Tursunov prevailed 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 6-4 5-7 6-4 after three hours and 56 minutes. And then James Ward was beaten 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 8-6 by Evgeny Donskoy.
It was a cruel blow for the British team as they try and win through to a play-off in the Europe/Africa Zone Group.
The concluding singles rubbers are tomorrow.
