The 2014 tennis season once again proved to very competitive in the Sheffield and District league sponsored by Deuce UK and Slazenger.
The winners of the mens division 1 trophy wasn’t decided until the final weekend of the season, with Beauchief eventually securing a successful defence of their league title after being pushed hard by their rivals.
They were undefeated for the first month of the season but then slipped to a narrow loss to Ecclesall, which meant they had to defeat the previously unbeaten Abbeydale on the penultimate weekend to keep alive their hopes championship hopes alive. After a hard fought match, Beauchief emerged with a 5–4 victory which, together with victory over Hallamshire in the final match was enough to retain the title.
Hallam Grange secured a quick return to the top division after being relegated last year, winning the mens Division 2 title. Moorgate enjoyed a successful season with their 1st team remaining undefeated to convincingly win Division 3, and their third team claiming the Division 7 trophy. Ecclesall also claimed two titles, with their men’s 2nd team winning Division 4 and their third team winning Division 7. Queens Park in Chesterfield won mens Division 5.
In the ladies league, Dore and Totley also won the division one title for the second consecutive year.
Rustlings were triumphant in Division 2, with Beauchief second team winning Division 3 and Abbeydale C picking up Division 4.
The Sheffield and District LTA have been holding their annual tournament this week attracting 120 entries. The tournament is based at Hallamshire Tennis and Squash club whilst also using courts at other clubs around Sheffield. The finals with be held on Saturday July 12 at Hallamshire Tennis and Squash club from 2pm with a barbecue and refreshments available throughout the day.
