Teenage triple jumper seeks improvement
SHEFFIELD triple jumper Adam Khan vowed to return to the Sainsbury's UK School Games bigger and better next year after seeing his debut end agonisingly short of the podium.
The 15-year-old recorded an impressive leap of 13.57m with just his second jump of the competition – his third longest outdoor best of the 2010 season.
However the Silverdale School pupil failed to improve on this and had to settle for fourth place – 75centimetres shy of Matthew Kerr in third as Bradley Pike took the title in 14.58m.
But despite being unable to capitalise on a promising start Khan insists all is not lost as he eyes another crack at the title next year.
"I wasn't too happy with how my UK School Games performance went as I got off to a good start but couldn't build from there," said Khan.
"But because of my age I guess I should still be happy with fourth and I'm able to come back next year and I know I will do better after this year's experience.
"I wasn't under too much pressure at all because of my age but still I didn't perform to my best and that is disappointing. It's the end of the season and I'm a bit tired but that shouldn't be an excuse.
"It was a great weekend even if the competition didn't go so well and the whole experience of being in the athletes' village has been brilliant and something I could get used to in the future."
Although Khan left Gateshead empty-handed he has been no stranger to the podium this year – the highlight a personal best jump of 13.96m in winning bronze at July's English Schools' Championships. And it is successes like those that gives the City of Sheffield Athletic Club ace the belief that 2011 will be just as fruitful – if not more.
"This year has been brilliant for me and I got a medal in the English Schools' earlier in the year which I wasn't expecting to do," he added.
"I'll get two weeks rest before I start training again. I can't wait to get going again."
The Sainsbury's UK School Games is managed by the Youth Sport Trust, a national charity that works with more than 450 school sport partnerships across the country to improve the PE and school sport experience for all young people. For more information visit www.youthsporttrust.org
