World number one Nick Matthew saw off Ryan Cuskelly in straight games to set up a second round clash with Laurens Jan Anjema in the Windy City Open in Chicago.
The Sheffield ace, the top seed, claimed a hard-fought 11-6, 12-10, 11-9 victory over qualifier Cuskelly.
Matthew, competing in Chicago for the first time in eight years, felt the scoreline was “very harsh” on Cuskelly.
“He really went for it in the second game - which is a lesson to the lower ranked players to really go for it as there’s nothing to lose,” said the 33-year-old.
Matthew, aiming to build on his recent wins in the Swedish Open and the British National Championships, next faces Dutchman Jan Anjema, who brushed aside Henrik Mustonen.
