Three-time world champion Nick Matthew has expressed his delight at securing a fourth Swedish Open title.
The Sheffield ace battled back from a game down to upset top seed Ramy Ashour 11-13, 11-6, 11-8, 6-11, 11-4 in the final of the event yesterday.
The result means Matthew, who faces an as yet unknown qualifier in the first round of the British National Championships, which begin in Manchester on Wednesday, will regain sole occupancy of the world No 1 spot when this month’s world PSA rankings come out. He had shared the top ranking with Gregory Gaultier, who he beat in the semi-finals of Linköping Sporthall in Linköping.
“I’m proud to be Swedish Open Champion,” said 33-year-old Matthew. “It was one of the toughest matches I ever played - it tested everything; physical, mental, technical and tactical.”
He tweeted: “So glad that @RamyAshour seemed to get over his injury in the 3rd game & finished the match. Nobody wanted a Manchester again #greatwarrior.”
