Nick Matthew has marked his return to competitive action with a run to the quarter finals of the US Open.
The 34-year-old beat fellow Englishman Chris Simpson on Tuesday night to reach the last eight where he will play Egypt’s Fares Dessouki tonight in Philadelphia.
The Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club member had taken a break from active competition following his Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph in July in anticipation of the birth of daughter Charlotte last month.
And he knows the true test of his match fitness and sharpness will come the further he progresses in the tournament.
Matthew beat another Englishman in Eddie Charlton in the first round and has a must less taxing run to the last eight than tonight’s foe Dessouki.
The Egyptian has played five games in each of his two matches, spending 175 minutes on court in comparison to Matthew’s 90.
