SECOND seed Nick Matthew claimed a hard-fought win over Jaymie Haycocks last night to set up a quarter-final match up with Chris Simpson in the British National Championships in Manchester.
Sheffield’s Matthew, ranked number one in the world, came from a game down to beat Haycocks 9/11, 11/5, 11/7, 11/4 in 46 minutes.
The 31-year-old had never previously faced the Shropshire player.
Simpson, who beat Charles Sharpes in straight games to reach the last eight, said: “I’m a bit annoyed I’ve got Nick again – I always seem to get him in this event – though one year it was to my advantage as he pulled out.”
Simpson is coached by David Pearson, who also works with Matthew.
