Nick Matthew starts his bid today for a record-equalling fourth title at the British National Squash Championships.
He gave those efforts a boost with the perfect build-up when winning the Swedish Open title for the third successive time at the weekend.
The World No 1, from Sheffield, beat his England teammate Peter Barker 11-7, 11-6, 11-5 in the final of the PSA International 50 event in Linkoping.
Matthew had beaten Barker in the quarter-finals of the recent Tournament of Champions in New York in which he lost in the final to Egypt’s Ramy Ashour who was the top seed.
Winner of the gold medal at the at the squash event at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year, he is the top seed for the Manchester event.
