WORLD champion Nick Matthew suffered a surprise defeat to close friend Daryl Selby in the final of the British National Championships in Manchester last night.
Essex player Selby edged a titanic duel, which lasted 84 minutes, 9-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7 to claim the title.
Matthew, the defending champion, booked his place in the final after recording a 11-4, 11-3, 11-6 victory over Tom Richards on Saturday.
It means the Sheffield player missed out on securing a record-equalling fourth British national title.
Selby said: “Nick’s intensity overpowered me in the first, but in the second I started attacking more.
“I had a plan, but he didn’t let me execute it early on, he didn’t let me do anything.
“After that the plan came into action and I was playing some of the best squash I’ve ever played.
“I felt I moved up to Nick’s level, I matched him physically and I deserved to win.”
