Spurr joins Owls crocked list

TOMMY Spurr is doubtful for the Owls' clash with Coventry at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Manager Brian Laws has revealed that the ever-present left-back is among the club's fresh crop of injuries.

Spurr received a heavy blow to his thigh in last Saturday's defeat at Derby and has suffered bleeding into the muscle.

Peter Gilbert trained yesterday after missing the Pride Park match with an Achilles tendon niggle and he is on stand-by for a recall.

But Spurr is not being ruled out. He showed his powers of recovery when he played in the Sheffield derby only a fortnight after suffering ankle ligament damage at Plymouth and after it had been expected that he would miss the United game.

Laws confirms: "Tommy is a doubt for Saturday - but you can't write him off. He was determined to carry on playing, last time. Nothing would surprise me with him."

Etienne Esajas could be fit for the Coventry game after missing the Derby clash with an Achilles tendon niggle.

But the results of tests on Akpo Sodje's hamstring tendon are still awaited, and Wade Small is expected to be out for seven to 10 days with the hamstring problem that kept him out last Saturday.

Laws watched the Reserves lose 2-1 to Grimsby. "We conceded a couple of naive goals," said the Owls manager. "Lewis Buxton did all right in centre midfleld, and Jimmy Smith worked hard; Franny Jeffers got a goal."

Right-back Liam McMen-amin figured in Northern Ireland Under-21s' 3-1 win against Scotland in Hamilton.

The 19-year-old went on as a sub at half-time when it was 2-1.

Jermaine Johnson is on Jamaica duty against Canada in Kingston tonight.
