SPORTS AWARDS: Unsung Hero is Chesterfield fan Jeff Hall

CHESTERFIELD superfan Jeff Hall won the Fluid HD sponsored Unsung Hero accolade at The Star and St John Sports Awards.

And what a worthy winner.

He has been a follower of the club for nearly 50-years and is more than just a supporter.

He is a match-day programme seller, a steward, fundraiser and he has even sponsored the Saltergate corner flags.

A retired school caretaker, Jeff helps clean the dressing rooms and has been known to perform any painting or general odd job work needed around the ground. He's the club's real unsung hero.

The glittering Edge Telecom sponsored Sports Awards, hosted at Sheffield's Ponds Forge by Christa Ackroyd, recognised sporting excellence of all kinds – with the spotlight also on amateurs and business, as well as OIympic heroes, football superstars, boxing idols, cricket legends and other sporting greats.

Other Unsung Hero Award finalists were:

Jason Cross, of Doncaster's Toll Bar Amateur Rugby League Club, played a significant part in the area recover from the devastating floods of 2007, which ruined its four pitches and clubhouse. Without his efforts, many teams and players would not have had the opportunity to play rugby this year. The coach turned his hand to fundraising, liased with local schools regarding the use of playing facilities, allocated new training equipment and kit. The club raised 14,000 themselves, with a donation of 20,000 from Doncaster Rotary Club.

Jacqui Bancroft is a parent and volunteer at Thornhill School in Rotherham. The working mum of two, coaches football in her own time, takes days off to support the school side and helps at Saturday sports clubs, offering youngsters confidence both in sport and their school work. She is completing her level two football coaching qualification and plans to launch a new girl's football team. She organises tournaments and fundraising activities to pay for medals and trophies.
