SPORTS AWARDS: Taekwondo Allstars is Amateur Club 2008
A TAEKWONDO club which produced Team GB's first ever medal in the sport was honoured at The Star and St John Sports Awards.
Doncaster Dome based Allstars Club won the Amateur Sports Club of the Year Award, sponsored by 4funding.
The award honours a team that has a produced a significant sporting performance in the past 12-months.
The Allstars Club, run by Team GB coach Gary Sykes, a 6th degree black belt Master, produced Britain's first Olympic taekwondo medal winner, Sarah Stevenson – who got a bronze this summer in Beijing.
The glittering Edge Telecom sponsored Sports Awards, hosted at Ponds Forge by BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd, recognised sporting excellence of all kinds – with the spotlight also on amateurs and business, as well as OIympic heroes, football superstars, boxing idols, cricket legends and other sporting greats.
Other finalists for the Amateur Sports Club of the Year Award, sponsored by 4funding, were:
The City of Sheffield Athletics Club: The British Athletics League team won promotion to the Premier Division and topped the Northern League Division to move into Division 2EC next season. Its Young Athletes League team retained their promotion place in the Premier Division
Sheffield FC: The world's first football club celebrated their 150th season in 2007/08 in the presence of FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Brazilian legend Pele. They were crowned Sheffield Senior Cup winners. The club has created womens', disability and junior sides.
