SPORTS AWARDS: Paralympic star Jon Hall is Disabled Sports Personality 2008

PARALYMPICS hero Jon Hall celebrated another win at The Star and St John Sports Awards.

He won the Disabled Sports Personality of the Year Award, sponsored by Sheffield City Taxis

Doncaster born and living in Chesterfield, the former Sheffield Steelers wheelchair basketball team playere returned home from the Beijing Paralympics with a bronze medal.

He was one of several Sheffield Steelers in Team GB and he played a key role in helping them to claim third place with two wins over the USA.

He was recently presented with a Discover the Spirit of Doncaster Award.

The Disabled Sports Personality of the Year Award paid tribute to outstanding achievement, commitment and dedication of a local disabled athlete or team.

The glittering Edge Telecom sponsored Sports Awards, hosted at Sheffield's Ponds Forge by BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd, recognised sporting excellence of all kinds – with the spotlight also on amateurs and business, as well as OIympic heroes, football superstars, boxing idols, cricket legends and other sporting greats.

Other finalists for the Disabled Sports Personality of 2008, sponsored by Sheffield City Taxis, were:

Matthew Asbridge: The 39-year-old Rotherham Harriers endurance runner suffers from cerebral palsy sufferer – which effects reflexes, motor development and co-ordination. But he's overcome his disability to compete against and beat able bodied athletes. He has won medals and trophies. An inspiration to others, he is dedicated and committed to developing sporting opportunities for children and young people with disabilities – who even ask for his autograph.

Thorne Lions & Warriors: This group of Doncaster area 16 special needs footballers, aged 16 to 51, are passionate about soccer. They play other teams like themselves. The Warriors have won silverware but for the less able Lions it's all about taking part. They'll even cheer an own goal.

But for them, just to be shortlisted for this award, is like winning the World Cup.
