Speedway: Former Tiger bids to shine in World Cup

SHEFFIELD-born Simon Stead is determined to repay the faith shown in him by Great Britain boss Rob Lyon in the World Cup next week.

Stead, who spent four seasons with Sheffield Tigers between 1999 and 2002, will ride in Event Two at King's Lynn next Monday, against Australia, Sweden and Finland.

Despite still living in Sheffield, Stead rides for Swindon Robins in the Elite League and has enjoyed a fine season.

He said: "It's a great honour to ride for your country and I was disappointed with myself for missing out last year. I never lost faith, though, and understood why Rob went down the route he did with the younger riders.

"Now I just want to do all I can to show everyone that he's done the right thing in bringing me back in. This season has been great for me and it would be cool if I could add to it by helping us to a good result at King's Lynn.

"When I drifted away from the international scene I realised it was time for me to start enjoying my speedway and that's what I've done. I haven't put myself under the pressure I have in the past, it's paid dividends."

Stead has been helped by the fact that he works for his dad, Trevor, at the family garage, Eric Stead Ltd, in Sheffield: "I'm relaxed at work and relaxed at Swindon," he said.
