World champion Greg lines up for Parker’s farewell

Worlds best: Greg Hancock

Worlds best: Greg Hancock

WORLD Champion Greg Hancock is heading to Sheffield for a rare UK appearance in March.

Hancock, 41, has agreed to ride in Shane Parker’s farewell meeting at Owlerton on Sunday, March 18 (5pm).

The hugely popular Californian, who hasn’t raced in the UK Elite League since 2007, won his second world title last year after a staggering 14-year gap. He now lives in Sweden after starting his career with Cradley Heath in 1989 but has rarely appeared at Owlerton down the years.

And Parker, who won the hearts of Tigers fans with a storming final season in 2011, says Hancock needed little persuasion to do his meeting.

“He jumped at the opportunity when I called him, and that says a lot about the guy from my point of view,” he said.

“I’m over the moon getting Greg to agree. I think he started over here around the same time I started (they were just one year apart, Greg 1989, Shane 1990), and the year he had last year at this stage of his career was phenomenal.

“To be able to say he’s coming to do my farewell, well, I’m honoured to have him in my meeting.”
