Uncertain future as Cooper nurses injury

PAUL Cooper admits he has "no idea" whether a Premier League club will offer him a team place next season.

The Sheffield Tigers fans favourite saw his season ended in August with a badly broken ankle - but he is set to return to training before Christmas in preparation for 2010.

And he's revealed how his future is up in the air - not just with the Owlerton club, who stood by him during a confidence crisis early last season.

He said: "I really don't know about next season yet. I must admit it was a very, very hard year. It went badly wrong for me in the early stages and it certainly tested my enthusiasm.

"I don't know whether I'll be back with Sheffield or not. I have no idea whether they want me or whether any other club will want me after the way I rode at times last season.

"And just when it started coming together for me, the injury struck and it ended my season. I was hoping I could have made a comeback but it just wasn't to be for me.

"I'm going to give it a test before Christmas and see how it goes from there. The injury feels a lot better, I have much better mobility now and it seems to have cleared pretty well, but I'm not sure how it will feel on a speedway bike!

"I'd like to wish the Sheffield fans all the very best for the winter. I don't know whether we'll be back together next March.

"But we'll see what happens when the promoters get back from their big meeting later this month."

Cooper is referring to Owlerton chiefs David Hoggart and Neil Machin attending the British Speedway Promoters' Association AGM next week.
