Title-chasing Diamonds edge thriller at Owlerton
Sheffield Tigers 43 Newcastle Diamonds 47
SHEFFIELD saw their outstanding winning run ended by title-chasing Newcastle in an Owlerton thriller last night.
And whilst the Diamonds rode well and were worthy winners, Tigers also contributed to their own downfall after seven straight wins.
They only provided three racewinners throughout the meeting and Newcaste had too much firepower in their top four, including plenty of points from the back.
Aussie ace Mark Lemon again showed his liking for the super-fast Owlerton raceway with a flawless 15-point maximum.
Rising stars Kenni Larsen and Rene Bach, who are both attracting interest from Elite League clubs, were equally impressive with 10-points each. Larsen was untouchable in his first three rides before tailing off.
It looked to be going wrong for Eric Boocock's men in Heat 6 when Ricky Ashworth's bike hit problems and he missed the two-minute time allowance. Reserve Simon Lambert had to replace him and the Diamonds extended their lead to four-points despite the best efforts of Hugh Skidmore.
Tigers went level after a sensational Heat 10 when Ashworth bagged a vital and hard fought win over Bach.
Hugh Skidmore also picked his moment to pass Jason King for a vital third spot to make it 30-30 in a topsy-turvy meeting.
Still Newcastle came back strongly with a 4-2 in the next race despite the in-form Josh Auty putting the pressure on the impressive Larsen.
Auty continued to give the fans great entertainment and after going from a 15-metre handicap in Heat 13 he was able to edge into second place to keep the meeting alive with the Tyneside men sensing victory – and they held on.
SHEFFIELD: Richard Hall 10, Josh Auty 10, Hugh Skidmore 7+1, Ricky Ashworth 5, Josef Franc 4+2, Paul Cooper 4+1, Simon Lambert 3+2.
NEWCASTLE: Mark Lemon 15, Kenni Larsen 10, Rene Bach 10, Dakota North 10, Jason King 2, Derek Sneddon 0, Anders Anderson 0.
