Tigers teenage sensation Auty targets top spot

JOSH Auty is in with a real chance of qualifying for the Premier League Riders' Championship in September.

The Tigers teenager has been in fine form and looks set to move into the number one slot throughout the month of August once the sport's governing body confirm the new official team averages.

And if Auty holds his form he will be the automatic qualifier for the showpiece PLRC event to represent Sheffield - leaving reigning champion Ricky Ashworth sweating on a wildcard entry to defend his title.

It's great progress for the West Yorks-based racer who was at reserve for a chunk of last season, his first season with the Owlerton side.

And he's looking to maintain his form when Newport visit Owlerton in Premier League action tomorrow as Tigers look to propel themselves towards a top four spot.

He said: "I'm feeling good about my racing; I think my scores have proved that. It helps when you're enjoying things and it was great for Ricky and me to win the Premier League Pairs. If I am going to number one it won't worry me. I've said all along that I'm ambitious and the top spot is where I want to be but I know people like Ricky will want it back. And it would be great for me if I could ride in the PLRC. It would be a major step forward for me, it was one of the things I thought about when I looked ahead to the season and the way things are going I think I can do it."

Tigers boss Eric Boocock has been responsible for a lot of Auty's development in the early stages of his career. He said: "I'm delighted to see Josh making such good progress because I've worked with him right from the start.

"He's a real entertainer as well and it's no surprise to me to see him realising his potential. His move to Sheffield has paid off so far. One thing I've avoided is getting on to him about his gating, everyone seems to do that and he doesn't need reminding about it because people are always on his case. He will continue to improve and that can only be good news for the team."
