Tigers foiled by Compton

Workington Comets 47 Sheffield Tigers 43

FORMER skipper Andre Compton came back to haunt the Tigers as, for the second time in three away meetings, they took high-flying opposition to the wire only to lose in the dramatic final stages.

After a last-heat setback at Somerset two weeks ago, the Owlerton side narrowly failed to build on last week's superb victory at Glasgow, although they did claim a bonus point at Derwent Park on Saturday.

Against the Comets, who have one of the best heat-leader trios in the Premier, Sheffield led three times until succumbing in the last three races.

They went ahead as early as the seccond race when in-form reserves Chris Mills and Paul Cooper banged in their first 5-1.

But when Richard Hall ran wide in his opening ride next time out, the Cumbrians hit back to level with a maximum from Adrian Rymel and Richard Lawson, who put the hosts ahead in heat 5 when they repeated the feat. Josh Auty and Chris Mills returned the compliment in the next race to square the scores at 18-18 and a 4-2 from Cooper and Hugh Skidmore in the eighth again put Tigers in the driving seat.

Workington managed to level it again in heat 11 as the flying Compton nosed his way past Ricky Ashworth, who was under par after crashing in his second ride, before Mills sped to his second win in the next race and third place from Joel Parsons left Tigers 37-35 ahead with three to go. But Compton proved to be the match-winner as he slammed in two precious wins to claim a five-ride maximum for the Comets.

TIGERS: C. Mills 9+2, R. Hall 9, P. Cooper 7+1, J. Auty 6+1, R. Ashworth 5, J. Parsons 4+2, H. Skidmore 3+1.
