TIGERS have named Ricky Ashworth and Shane Parker to defend their Premier League Pairs title at Somerset on Friday week, June 24.
The news is no surprise as the Owlerton club look to add to their impressive record at the track where they won in league action last month. But they’ve been handed a tough qualifying group as they come up against home duo Sam Masters and Cory Gathercole, plus GB hero Ben Barker for Plymouth.
Said Ashworth: “Last year winning this event was brilliant and we would love to do it again. It’s obviously a shame for Josh Auty that he can’t be there to defend it because of injury but in Shane we have a rider of vast experience who knows every inch of the Somerset track having raced for them last year.
“I’m looking forward to the meeting and am confident we can give a good account of ourselves.”
The meeting will again include the unique points scoring system where a rider gains four points for a win, three for second, two for third and nothing for last place. It means second and third places are effectively more important than race wins which encourages the team riding element.
Meanwhile Tigers continue their Premier League schedule with a home clash with Newcastle on Thursday.
