Tigers mourn their heroic rival
NEIL Machin has paid tribute to friend and rival Kenny Smith after the Scunthorpe boss lost his battle with throat cancer yesterday.
Sheffield Tigers owner Machin recommended Smith to be the boss of Scorpions some years ago.
Smith, aged 55, took charge of the Scorpions on Saturday night in their Knockout Cup tie with Edinburgh, and did a lap of honour on the back of David Howe's bike.
Tigers will observe a minute's silence as a mark of respect, before Thursday's Premier League clash with Newport at Owlerton.
Said Machin: "When Scunthorpe first applied to move into the Premier League, one of the stipulations was that they had a team manager with a good reputation. I recommended Kenny and there was nobody with a better reputation than that guy.
"He was totally dedicated to the sport. He was totally dedicated to Scunthorpe Speedway and, even though they have been our rivals, we always maintained a strong friendship with Kenny.
"His passing is a massive loss to the sport and everyone at Sheffield Speedway is saddened by the news, expected though it was.
"I went to Scunthorpe on Saturday night to see Kenny and I am glad I did. He couldn't talk, but it was great to see him there and it was a measure of the man's courage that he made it.
"We pass on our sincere sympathy to our friends at Scunthorpe."
