Tigers lose out in push to revamp league

DAVID Hoggart has revealed how a proposed restructuring of the Premier League almost went through at the sport's AGM.

Hoggart and club owner Neil Machin represented Sheffield at the British Speedway Promoters' Association conference in Bournemouth.

Machin proposed the season starting with league fixtures before the top eight break away into a seperate championship with 14 more fixtures each to decide the title.

But the vote went against Machin's proposal and the traditional Premier Trophy will remain - but thankfully Tigers are in a more attractive group with Birmingham, Redcar, Scunthorpe and Stoke.

And the Owlerton side will also face Birmingham in the Knockout Cup first round with a place against Somerset in the quarter-final up for grabs.

Said Hoggart: "While we were disappointed about the vote going against the new league structure, the Premier Trophy group presents meetings against Scunthorpe and Stoke who always bring plenty of support.

"We're happy with the cup draw too because Birmingham and ourselves always put on cracking meetings.

"We know the points limit remains at 42.50 so we can now crack on with our team building which we will be doing this week."

Machin remains on the sport's management committee - and Owlerton is almost certain to once again host the Premier League Riders' Championship.
