Tigers halted by the rain

TIGERS' hopes of jumping up to second in the Premier League were dashed by the weather.

Last night's scheduled trip to Newport was postponed with the South Wales track under water after heavy rain - Sheffield having hoped to take all four points to continue their climb up the ranks after they were bottom of the pile just a month ago.

Said boss Neil Machin: "It was frustrating to have made the trip for nothing, especially as we had targeted the meeting as one where we wanted all four points on offer."

Sheffield remain sixth in the league, six points behind leaders King's Lynn, with their next match being at home to Rye House this Thursday.

Meanwhile, Machin has given a massive thumbs-up to last week's national initiative to develop a new generation of fans. Under 16s were admitted free to speedway meetings throughout the country as part of the sport's 80th anniversary celebrations - with hundreds of new faces watching Thursday's win over Newcastle.

Said Machin: "We were delighted to see so many newcomers and hopefully they will come back for more this week."

Sheffield already have a policy of admitting under-12s for free.
