Neil Machin has revealed how club bosses have been burning the midnight oil trying to patch up Sheffield’s injury-hit side ahead of tonight’s Owlerton clash with champions Scunthorpe (7.45).

Machin admits they’ve hit a brick wall when it comes to signing riders because of their averages – and in some cases availability for their remaining fixtures. Once again the club go into tonight’s meeting with three guest riders against a powerhouse Scorpions side.

Said Machin: “It’s hard finding the right rider and just when you think you’re getting somewhere an obstacle stands in the way, whether it be their availability or a new average. I’d like to place on record my sincere thanks to the riders who guest for us and we will have to be at our best to beat Scunthorpe.”

Tigers have once again turned to Cumbrian racer Richard Lawson to spearhead the side.

Lawson has been called in to replace injured skipper Simon Stead and has become a regular in the side.

He impressed when riding for Lakeside on Monday in their defeat at Peterborough and has always scored well when making a guest appearance for the Sheffield Window Centre side.

Tigers have also booked Rye House Rocket Jason Bunyan, who raced in the New Zealand Grand Prix as wildcard in March, as a replacement for the retired Joe Haines.

Coventry Storm youngster Oliver Greenwood will also make another appearance at reserve in place of Damian Koppe, who is awaiting a scan on his damaged knee.

It means the rider replacement facility will be used for Adam Roynon.

SHEFFIELD: Richard Lawson, Andre Compton, Ricky Wells, Adam Roynon R/R, Jason Bunyan, Oliver Greenwood, Facundo Albin.

SCUNTHORPE: Josh Auty, David Howe R/R, Nicolai Klindt, Tyson Nelson, Thomas Jorgensen, Ryan Douglas, Lewis Blackbird.
